Cyanogenmod 6, Impressive

Almost complete

Cyanogenmod 6 is out, and boy is it a doozy. It is one of the hottest mods you can put on an Android and this time it brings Froyo to the mix. Of course I have been booting up the release candidates along the way, but this release has been deemed stable, so it is as official as one can get with a rooted ROM.

Seriously I am impressed. There is a lot of talk about the next Android release, Gingerbread, and while most of it surrounds the rumor of Android 3.0 focusing on the UI, I have to wonder, is Google watching what is taking place in the rooted community?

I ask because Cyanogen and his team have put together more than increased functionality.  It offers a tight integration with the ADW Launcher, which lets the user completely adjust just about everything when it comes to the UI.  The number of desktop screens, which way the drawer scrolls, the number of columns and rows in both the drawer and on the desktop, which screen is the home screen, a dock bar for apps, and market place full of themes to really flesh out the personal feel.

However, my personal favorite feature, is the ability to hide apps in the drawer. Whether its stock apps I just do not use, or the extras coming with the mod, I can create a catalog of what I want to access most and hide the rest. For example, the only email I use on my phone is Gmail, so I can hide the more generic app, along with anything else I rarely or never use.  I can even create different groups and easily switch between productivity apps, games, or any other grouping I desire. This is way better than folders.

Here is a list of what Cyanogenmod offers beyond Android’s  Froyo:

  • Enhanced UI Tweeks, hacks
  • Inbuilt Root, secure Super User access.
  • Deskclock extra settings
  • ADWLauncher 1.0.1 – A highly Themeable/customizable launcher, Themable user interface elements
  • Music app enhancements
  • Phone mod V.30, WyContacts 1.2
  • MMS enhancements, Improved RTL text rendering
  • FLAC playback support

  • OpenVPN support
  • Browser incognito mode
  • Customize notification LED colors, frequency
  • JIT toggle, configurable heapsize, compcache support
  • Adjustable haptic feedback -
  • Notification area hacks : Colors,  Battery percentage display, Signal dbm display
  • Trackball wake, trackball unlock, menu unlock
  • Surfaceflinger night mode and effects – Jeff Sharkey, widget
  • Reflow webviews on pinch option
  • Enhanced accelerometer settings
  • Browser fullscreen mode and other enhancements
  • Long press volume buttons to skip songs
  • Accelerated ARMv7 JPEG decoding, Skia acceleration on ARMv7

No the nexus one doesn’t have dual cameras, however some handsets do have that functionality, like the EVO. I just happen to have the mod running on my Nexus One. Currently the new mod is for:

    Nexus One
    HTC Aria
    HTC Dream/ Magic
    HTC EVO
    HTC Hero CDMA
    HTC Hero GSM
    HTC Incredible
    HTC MyTouch 3G Slide
    Motorola Droid

So right now, the dual camera support, would really apply to the EVO and Incredible

And no, without the extra camera, the Nexus One doesn’t make video conferencing possible
